Physics Questions and their answers:

Q1.

A thin glass rod is bent into a semicircle of radius r. A charge +q is uniformly distributed along the upper half, and a charge of -q is distributed along the lower half, as shown in Fig. 23-34b. Find the magnitude and direction of the electric field E at P, the center of the semicircle.

(a) The magnitude of the electric field at P is:
  1.  q / (pi2*epsilon0*r2)
  2.  q*r2 / (pi2*epsilon0)
  3.  -q*r2 / (pi2*epsilon0)
  4.  q / (2*pi*epsilon0*r2)
  5.  q*r2 / (pi*epsilon0)

(b) The direction of the electric field at P is:
  1.  Vertically upwards
  2.  Vertically downwards
  3.  Horizontally to the right
  4.  Straight out of the computer screen
  5.  Straight into the computer screen
  6.  Horizontally to the left
Answer:  2.  Vertically downwards
